‘SlabScope’ — a kid-friendly video microscope

Video microscopes are great tools to explore the intricate beauty of tiny things.  Our SlabScope is the simplest possible design, accessible to young children yet interesting to all ages.  The camera is housed in an oval slab of rugged corian, looking through a nickel-sized window.  The focus is fixed so that an object placed directly on the window appears on the video screen magnified about 50 times. Lighting is built-in to provide bright, sharp images.

Can you find all the eyes on a one-dollar bill?

It’s easy with a focus-free SlabScope!

A shoeless boy spotted playing baseball on a 1939 Centennial of Baseball postage stamp.  The world of the minuscule comes alive through the SlabScope’s magic window.  There are no controls or adjustments to fuss with—freeing  the user to explore at will.  A penny from her pocket, with a piece of lint adhered; the weave of her sleeve; the universe of details on a dollar pulled from dad’s wallet— tiny is huge when a SlabScope is used.

We offer the SlabScope as a component, ready to install on a counter or tabletop of your choice.  Simply drill a few holes using the supplied template, drop in the slab, and connect an NSTC video monitor of any size you like.  A 30” flat panel monitor mounted to the wall just above a counter is a typical installation.

We can also provide a complete turnkey exhibit with table and monitor included.  Please inquire to discuss your needs.
